One of the most prominent political notions today is the populist idea that there is one and only one People, and that this People is represented by the populist party (at least if we look at the prominence of right-wing populism as expressed in various places in Western Europe and by Trump). Foreign workers, refugees, foreign students, asylum seekers, Muslims, academics of non-national origin who take jobs in contexts they 'shouldn't', etc., pose a threat to the unity of such a People.
