À gauche, le narcissisme
de la cause perdue

Je vois le FN assez proche d'une victoire électorale pour qu'il soit justifié à mes yeux de penser à la formation d’un
« front uni ». Suis-je alarmiste ? Le fait est que les candidats, résignés à la présence de MLP au second tour,
disputent entre eux à qui gagnera le droit de concourir avec elle. Mais qui saura mettre au pilori, sur la place
publique, la vraie nature de Marine et sa meute ?

À peine avais-je collé hier soir sur mon blog de Mediapart le récent « Appel des psychanalystes
contre Marine Le Pen », que m’était signalé le texte d’une personne que je n’ai pas l’avantage
de connaître, Mme Diane Scott, autre membre du Club. Placé sur son blog à elle, son texte
commente, ou plutôt prend à partie, à la fois l’Appel des 32 psychanalystes et ma tribune parue
dimanche dernier dans la Matinale du journal Le Monde, sous le titre « Les ruses du Diable ».
Mme Scott écrit : « La lutte contre le FN est l’alibi moral du maintien de choix électoraux
qui seraient identiques sans cette soi-disant contrainte créée par l’extrême-droite. » J'admets
volontiers que cette proposition est souvent exacte. Néanmoins, faut-il pour autant récuser
l’ébauche de tout front uni, certes circonstanciel et destiné à rester éphémère, contre une
menace mortelle et immédiate ? Ne vaudrait-il pas mieux, à un mois des élections, suspendre
les ressentiments et les revendications qui opposent entre eux, disons, les antifascistes, ou les
non fascistes, d’aujourd’hui ? Dois-je rappeler qu’il y avait aux débuts de la France libre des
maurrassiens comme des gens de gauche (et peut-être davantage des premiers que des seconds,
n'est-ce pas ?) Plus tard, en 1943, Aragon pouvait lancer son fameux « Celui qui croyait au
ciel / Celui qui n'y croyait pas ».
L’auteure me renvoie sur un ton comminatoire à mon « sommeil de classe » Doit-on en
conclure qu'elle prône une réédition en 2017 de la stratégie classe contre classe, qui fut celle de
l'Internationale communiste dans les années 1920, et qui inspira à Aragon, toujours lui, un
autre de ses vers célèbres, ne sentant pas, lui, la rose ni le réséda : « Feu sur les ours savants de
la social-démocratie » ?
Il me suffira de rappeler que l’accentuation de la menace fasciste amena le PCF à une
position toute différente en 1934. Fondé la même année, le Comité de Vigilance antifasciste des
Intellectuels invitait les « Travailleurs unis » à passer outre aux divergences : « nous venons
déclarer à tous les travailleurs, nos camarades, notre résolution de lutter avec eux pour sauver
contre une dictature fasciste ce que le peuple a conquis de droits et de libertés publiques. »
L'issue du revirement communiste fut en 1936 le Front Populaire. [NB : ma citation du Comité

« Une fausse peur »
J'entends bien que Diane Scott se moque et de moi et des gens comme moi, qui voudrions
mobiliser aux prochaines échéances électorales contre le FN. À ses yeux, nous sommes de toute
évidence alarmistes et pétochards. Elle n’est pas seule à le penser. On est bien forcé de
s’interroger sur soi-même quand on lit les propos de notre cher Claude Lanzmann, trésor
national, dans Paris-Match, le 5 mars dernier : « C’est une fausse peur que se font les Français.
Cela ne peut pas se produire dans un pays institutionnalisé comme le nôtre. »
Sur ce point, I beg to differ. Je me risque à contredire « un voyant dans le siècle ». Que les
sondages en soient maintenant à créditer Marine Le Pen de 40 % au second tour me paraît une
donnée en elle-même alarmante. En face d'elle, un Fillon perdra une bonne partie de la
gauche, qui se réfugiera dans l'abstention, et Macron (ou Mélenchon, ou Hamon, pour ceux
qui le croient possible) verra une bonne partie de la droite passer au FN, tandis que bien des
gens de gauche refuseront leur vote à l’héritier de Hollande. Je ne vois pas pour l’instant de
barrage à Le Pen, ou il est poreux. Alors, oui, il se pourrait que le ventre ait cessé d’être fécond,
qu’il ait été stérilisé par le « pays institutionnalisé » (qu’est-ce que ça veut dire, ça, exactement ?)
Mais si l’on n’était pas loin de la perte des eaux ? La France ne s’ennuie pas, elle me semble
grosse d’un malheur.
Bref, j’envie la sérénité de Lanzmann quand je pense à ce que serait l'appareil d'État aux
mains du FN. Je ne parle pas de son programme, ni de ses promesses, ni des faux-semblants
qu'il a multipliés, ni des jeux entre Marion et Florian, frais prénoms de pastorale. Je parle d’une
sale clique irrévocablement xénophobe, antirépublicaine et antidémocratique, prête à mettre la
main sur les commandes des ministères de la Justice, de l'Intérieur et de la Défense.
Plutôt vaincue
Peut-être ai-je trop d'imagination. Ou pas assez, mais trop de mauvaises lectures sur les
conséquences de la venue au pouvoir, par la voie des urnes, de partis autoritaires. Est-ce le fait
d’être juif? Lanzmann, lui, est tranquille comme Baptiste. Il se peut que, tout simplement, je
me trompe d’époque. « C’est fini, tout ça, mon vieux, et non seulement le pire n’est pas toujours sûr, mais il
est tout bonnement devenu impossible, comme l’a montré le récent triomphe d’Hillary — Bon, d’accord, dis-je, si
vous êtes bien sûr que la bête est désormais domestiquée, est devenue un animal d’appartement comme le léopard
dans “Bringing up Baby“, alors que chacun roupille de son “sommeil de classe“. »
Diane Scott, qui se présente comme « psychanalyste en formation », ce qui veut sans
doute dire qu’elle est en analyse, termine sa diatribe sur une profession de foi : « Pour ma part,
je préfère être vaincue que dupe. »
Autrement dit : Je serai fidèle à mes convictions fût-ce au prix de la défaite. La posture est noble.
Noble au point que ce qui ici s’avoue en clair n’est pas autre chose que ce que Lacan
nommait, à propos de nul autre que le vicomte de Chateaubriand, le « narcissisme suprême de
la Cause perdue ».

To the Left, the Narcissism of the Lost Cause

I can see the
NF [National Front] close enough to an electoral victory so that it is
justified in my view to think of the formation of a “united front”. Am I raising
an alarm? The fact is that the candidates, resigned to the presence of MLP [Marine
Le Pen] in the second round, debate among themselves who will gain the right to
compete with her. But who knows how to put in the pillory in the public place
the true nature of Marine and her pack?

No sooner had I pasted last night on my
blog of Mediapart the recent “Call
from the psychoanalysts against Marine Le Pen” than someone pointed out to me a
text by a person I do not have the advantage of knowing – Mrs Diane Scott,
another member of the Club. Placed on her own blog, her text comments, or
rather takes to task, both the Call of 32 psychoanalysts and my speaker’s
platform that appeared last Sunday in the Matinale
of Le Monde, under the title “The Ruses of the Devil [Les ruses du Diable]”.
Mrs Scott writes: “The
fight against the NF is the moral alibi of maintaining electoral choices which
would be the same without this so-called constraint created by the extreme
right”. I readily admit that this proposal is often accurate. Nevertheless, is
it necessary to challenge the draft of the whole united front, admittedly
circumstantial and destined to remain ephemeral, against a mortal and immediate
threat? Would it not be better, one month before elections, to suspend the resentments
and pretences that are opposed, between them, say the antifascists or the
non-fascists, today? Must I recall that at the beginning of free France there
were Maurrassians as the people of the left
(and perhaps more of the former than of the latter)? Later, in 1943, Aragon would
launch his famous, “The one who believed in heaven/The one who didn’t”.
The author refers me in
a comminatory tone to my “class sleep”. Should one conclude that she advocates
a re-edition in 2017 of the “class-against-class” strategy, which was the one
of the Communist International in the 1920s, and which inspired Aragon (yet
again) to another of his famous verses, scenting neither the rose nor the Reseda:
“Open fire on the dancing bears of Social Democracy”?
It will suffice for me to
recall that the accentuation of the fascist threat led the FCP [French
Communist Party] to a completely different position in 1934. Founded in the
same year, the antifascist Intellectuals Vigilance Committee invited the “United
Workers” to disregard the divergences: “we come to declare to all workers, our
comrades, our resolve to fight with them to save, against a fascist
dictatorship, what the people have gained from public rights and freedoms”. The
outcome of the communist reversal in 1936 was the Popular Front. [NB: my quote

“A False Fear”
I hear that Diane Scott is mocking me and the
people like me who would like to mobilise ourselves in the next election
campaign against the NF. In her eyes, we are quite evidently alarmists and cowards.
She is not alone in thinking so. We are forced to question ourselves when we
read what our dear Claude Lanzmann – a national treasure – has to say in Paris-Match on 5 March: “What the French
are making for themselves is a false fear. This cannot happen in an
institutionalised country like ours.”
On this point, I beg to differ. I take the risk to
contradict “a seer of the century”. That the opinion polls are crediting Marine
Le Pen with 40% of the votes in the second round is alarming data in and of
itself. Against her, Fillon will lose most of the left, who will then take refuge
in abstention, and Macron (or Mélenchon or Hamon, for those who believe it
possible) will see a good part of the right move to the NF while many on the
left will refuse to give their vote to the heir of Hollande. I do not see for a
moment where the dam of Le Pen might be porous. And then, yes, it may be that
the belly has ceased to be fertile, that it was sterilised by the “institutionalised
country” (what does that mean, exactly?). And if we were not far from the water
breaking? France is not bored, she seems to me pregnant with misfortune.
In short, I envy
Lanzmann’s serenity when I think of what the apparatus of the State in the hands
of the NF would be. I am not talking about its program or its promises or its
multiplied false pretences, or its games between Marion and Florian with their
fresh, pastoral names. I am talking about a trashy, irrevocably xenophobic,
anti-republican and undemocratic clique, ready to lay its hands on the orders
of the Ministries of Justice, Interior, and Defence.
Rather Defeated
Maybe I have too much imagination. Or not
enough, but have too many bad readings on the consequences of the coming to
power, through the ballot-boxes, of authoritarian parties. Is this the fact of
being Jewish? Lanzmann is quiet as the Baptist. It may be that quite simply I am
in the wrong epoch. “All that’s finished,
my old man, and not only is the worst not always certain, but it has simply
become impossible, as Hillary’s recent triumph has shown – Well, fine, I
say, if you are quite sure that the beast
is now domesticated, has become a pet like the leopard in ‘Bringing up Baby’, while everyone has a nap in their “class
sleep”.
Diane Scott, who
presents herself as a “psychoanalyst in formation”, which no doubt means that she
is in analysis, concludes her diatribe on a profession of faith: “For my part, I
prefer to be defeated than duped.”
In other words: I will be faithful to my convictions even at
the cost of defeat. The position is noble.
It is noble to the point
that what is clearly confessed here amounts to nothing else but what Lacan named, in regard to none other than the
viscount of Chateaubriand, the “supreme narcissism of the lost Cause”.
