Communiqué of the EFP on the Situation in Catalonia
The President of the EFP and its Bureau express their utmost concern for the dramatic situation in Catalonia which preceded, accompanied and followed on from thereferendum of October 1st, with the acts of violence we witnessed, as well as for thecurrent worsening of the conflict between the Spanish Government and the Catalonian Generalidad Government, as yet without an issue. The democratic orientation which, as psychoanalysts of the Freudian Field, we have always favoured as the condition ofpossibility and existence of our practice, and as horizon for our politics, renders us especially sensitive to all forms of suspension, degradation and humiliation of the right to freely express one’s opinion, as well as the opinion expressed through the voting procedure and the act of voting. In the same way, it also makes us extremely sensitive to unilateral violations of the law, and to the necessity of accepting all the positions inplay with the same rights of expressing one’s opinion, in accordance with symbolic criteria established and applied democratically, and specific to each consultation process which is democratically decided. When these two conditions are not respected, we are outside of the rules of democracy.
We full heartedly hope that a reopening of the dialogue might be possible, one that would allow each party to leave positions of unilateral rigidity behind, for were these positions to be maintained, they could take this crisis to the worst, with destructive effects which will end up being nefarious for all involved. We know that in such situations, only a rectification of the position of the conflicting parties, with theacceptance of a partial loss on each side, may have the power or reinitiating a dialectical process which is not parasited by the death drive, but inhabited by a vital and respectful push towards the Other.
As citizens, we each have our own political ideas. But as psychoanalysts, it is primarily the politics of psychoanalysis which is supposed to orient us. What is a determined desire for democracy today, in Europe and the national and regional communities ofwhich it is made – this is a question which, as psychoanalysts, we are led to ask ourselves, both in the internal debate of our analytical community and in the encounter with the social community as a whole and its representatives. No doubt, we will speak of this, with much interest and determination, at the European Forum on Determined Desires for Democracy which will take place in Turin on Saturday 18 November. Communiqué de la EFP sur la situation en Catalogne
Le Président de la EFP et son Bureau expriment leur plus vive préoccupation pour lasituation dramatique en Catalogne, qui a précédé, accompagné et suivi le référendum du 1er Octobre, avec les actes de violence auxquels nous avons assisté, et pour l’aggravation actuelle et sans issue, jusqu’à maintenant, du conflit entre le Gouvernement d’Espagne et le Gouvernement de la Generalidad catalane. L’orientation démocratique que, en tant que psychanalystes du Champ freudien nous avons toujours préféré comme condition de possibilité et d’existence de notre pratique, et comme horizon de notre politique, nous rend particulièrement sensibles à toutes les formes desuspension, de dégradation, d’humiliation du droit de libre expression de la propre opinion, comme celle qui passe à travers la procédure du vote et l’acte de voter. De lamême façon elle nous rend aussi extrêmement sensibles aux violations unilatérales dela loi et à l’exigence d’accueillir avec les mêmes droits d’expression toutes les positions en jeu, selon des critères symboliques démocratiquement établis et appliqués, propres à chaque consultation démocratiquement décidée. Sans le respect de ces deux conditions, nous sommes hors du jeu de la démocratie.
Nous espérons vivement que puisse se produire une réouverture du dialogue qui permette de sortir des positions de rigidité unilatérale qui, si sont maintenues, risquent de conduire cette crise vers le pire, avec des effets destructeurs qui finiront par nuire à toutes les parties en jeu. Nous savons que dans ces situations, seule une rectification dela position des parties en conflit, avec l’acceptation d’une perte partiale de chacun, peut avoir le pouvoir de relancer une dialectique qui ne soit pas parasitée par la pulsion demort, mais habitée d’une poussée vitale et respectueuse de l’Autre.
Comme citoyens nous avons chacun nos propres idées politiques. Mais comme psychanalystes, c’est la politique de la psychanalyse qui in primis est appelée à nous orienter. Qu’est-ce qu’un désir décidé de démocratie aujourd’hui, en Europe et dans les communautés nationales et régionales qui la composent, est une question que comme psychanalystes nous sommes appelés à nous poser, et dans le débat interne à notre communauté analytique et dans la rencontre avec la communauté sociale dans son ensemble et ses représentants. De cela nous discuterons sans aucun doute, avec un vif intérêt et détermination, lors du Forum Européen sur Désirs décidés de démocratie enEurope, qui se tiendra à Turin samedi 18 novembre prochain, et auquel je vous invite tous à participer.
