NLS Seminar: “Ablata Causa or Lost Cause? Transference Today?”
We continue our series of Seminar towards the NLS Congress in the summer, with special guest Geert Hoornaert, whose title, “Ablata Causa or Lost Cause?” offers us an ethical choice that contrasts the approach of contemporary psychiatry with the practice and politics of psychoanalysis today. In the treatment of mental suffering should we follow the advice of the well-known Latin tag, beloved of the medical profession, which promises that with the removal of the cause, the effects will disappear, or do we recognise that that the concept of the cause implies a real that cannot so easily be effaced and that we must therefore make a place for in the treatment? But
if we choose the latter, how then are we to proceed? As our guest will demonstrate, it is the concept of transference, as developed by Lacan in Seminar XI and elsewhere, that shows us the way.

This meeting of our clinical discussion group, the CLC, will feature a case presentation by Adrian Price, translator of Seminar X, Seminar XXIII, and Seminar XIX which will be published later this year. Our guest, Geert Hoornaert will act as a discussant. The event will be chaired by the director of the CLC, Gabriela van den Hoven.

The fourth in our series of seminars exploring the lures and logic of democracy in our contemporary world will coincide with the launch of the next issue of the Psychoanalytical Notebooks, a special issue devoted to "Lacanian Politics". Articles from this issue will be discussed and introduced by the editors and translators and this will give way to a broader round-table discussion of its main themes. It should provoke some lively discussion and if all goes to plan it will be possible to buy a copy of the relevant issue of the Psychoanalytical Notebooks at the event. On this occasion, we will also be joined by our friend and colleague, Adrian Price, who will speak about ‘Brotherhood and Segregation’, based on the last
chapter of his current translation project, Lacan’s Seminar XIX, Or… Worse.

“Clinical Workshop” is an activity of the Bulgarian Society of Lacanian Psychoanalysis, organized for the past 5 years, which opens a space for clinical discussion that is oriented by Lacanian psychoanalysis. Clinical cases are prepared in advance and come from the psychotherapeutic practice of a wide circle of professionals. Meetings for the school-year 2017 – 2018 will start in September and will continue once a month until February 2018.

« La pulsion surgit dans le dispositif analytique en se nouant au transfert. De par la présence en chair et en os de l’analyste, le corps pulsionnel est engagé dans chacune des séances. La présence de l'analyste incarne, pour celui qui s'engage dans une cure analytique, ce qui ne peut pas s’énoncer parce qu’il manque de mots, ce qui ne peut pas se savoir parce qu’il est impossible à savoir, au sens d’un trou dans le savoir. L'acte de l’analyste est requis pour faire surgir ce versant réel de l’inconscient. Le Séminaire XI, de Lacan, nous enseignera sur ce point.
Le transfert sera examiné sous l'angle de la présence de l'analyste, en tant qu'il incarne un semblant d'objet a, objet pulsionnel qui motive la répétition des demandes de l'analysant. Comment l'analysant finit-il par s'en séparer ? »
Cette conférence s'inscrit dans la perspective des journées d'étude de NLS-Qc qui se tiendront à Montréal les 21 et 22 avril 2018 sur « Les enjeux du transfert aujourd'hui : amour, savoir, pulsion » et du congrès de la NLS qui se tiendra à Paris les 30 juin et 1er juillet 2018 sur « Le transfert dans tous ses états – sauvage, politique, psychanalytique ».
