L’ « amour-passion », que Lacan différencie du « don actif » de l’Éros, est un phénomène illusoire survenant « lorsque chez l’autre apparaît quelque chose qui permet au sujet de recompléter, de nourrir l’image du Moi idéal ». Cette dimension imaginaire de l’amour fait rêver qu’il est possible de faire un avec deux, et prétend à la « complémentation » : deux êtres qui se complètent et font exister le rapport sexuel.
