Announcement from the Executive Committee of the NLS

A meeting of the NLS Council, enlarged to include the Presidents and Chairs of every Society, Group and Initiative was held on Sunday the 28th of February. We discussed the conditions for the upcoming congress in Ghent.

As a result of this meeting and the very broad consensus that emerged, the Executive Committee decided that this year's congress will be held exclusively by zoom and entirely in Plenary Session on the 22nd and 23rd May.

The General Assembly will be held in June, also by zoom. The date will be announced shortly.

Une réunion du Conseil de la NLS, élargi à tous les responsables des Sociétés, Groupes et Initiatives, s’est tenue ce dimanche 28 février. Nous y avons débattu des conditions de la tenue du prochain Congrès de Gand.

Suite à cette réunion et au très large consensus qui s’y est dégagé, le Comité Exécutif a décidé que le Congrès ce tiendra cette année exclusivement par zoom et entièrement en séance plénière les 22 et 23 mai.

L’Assemblée Générale aura lieu au mois de juin, par zoom également. La date en sera précisée prochainement.

COMITÉ D’ACTION DE L’ÉCOLE UNE

2020 – 2022

En créant un Comité d’action, terme issu de la révolte étudiante de mai 1968, J.-A. Miller l’avait conçu comme un élément critique, disons extime aux instances officielles de l’AMP, bien que suscité par elles. Aujourd’hui, la rébellion est plutôt portée par des voix extérieures au champ de la psychanalyse dans le monde et le Comité d’action est à mettre en œuvre selon une modalité renouvelée qui tient compte d’un tel contexte international, et un nouveau règlement intérieur.

1- Sont créés quatre Comités d’action de l’École Une, pour 2021-2022, qui représentent l’expérience des langues dans l’AMP et favorisent les échanges à un niveau international.

2 – Chaque Comité d’action sera doté d’un thème propre et se dédiera à des recherches rigoureuses et vigoureuses sur la question précise qui est en jeu, au terme desquelles il présentera un rapport pour répondre aux voix de contestation de la psychanalyse, venant des autres champs du savoir.

3 – La dimension interlinguistique sera à l’œuvre dans la composition de chaque CA et constituera la condition d’extimité au CA, tant pour l’animateur que pour les participants : la langue de l’Autre en sera l’élément extime.

4 – Les CA seront conviés à présenter un rapport en avril 2022.

5 – Le thème, l’animateur et la composition des 4 CA par des membres de l’AMP, seront répartis selon le schéma ci-dessous :

The effect of language on the body can be found in Freud’s early works, where the phenomena of hysterical conversion, somatic compliance and the symptom as a message based on identification, to be interpreted, were rooted in the signifiers of the Other.
The relationship between the symptom and the signifier was worked and reworked from so many angles by Lacan, until it occupied, at the time of Seminar XX, a place in which the real in language determines the articulation.

Eric Laurent in his book, The Other Side of Biopolitics, poses the question in this way:
“What is the unconscious at which Lacan arrives in his last teaching, that is no longer based on the Other as the field of signifiers and on the identification that makes this field exist?”[1]

The emphasis placed on both the undecipherable and writing on the basis of a contingent encounter decomplete this Other as a field of signifiers and focus on the perceivable effect of lalangue on the body.

In Seminar XX Lacan asks “[… ] can’t the formalisation of mathematical logic, which is based only on writing, serve us in the analytic process, in that what invisibly holds bodies is designated therein? […] Their very writing constitutes a support that goes beyond speech, without going beyond language’s actual effects”.[2]
In this formulation, the articulation of the body, language and writing takes account of the effects, which are perceived in the body, beyond speech. The Lacanian algebra is a formal writing of these effects that are commemorated as trauma, the writing of what is not written – as a symptom.
This offers a beyond of the meaning effects of the signifier in which deciphering has its prevalence and opens towards the One of infinitude, the jouissance of the body without the Other.
The real dimension of the unconscious corresponds with lalangue, and its pure equivocations, with which the body deciphers the trauma of an encounter with what cannot be written.

The symptom, as relation and knotting of the Imaginary, Symbolic and Real, outside of meaning or knowledge – is not a message to and from the Other, no longer interpretable, but a necessary result of the encounter of the body with lalangue.

L'effet du langage sur le corps se retrouve dans les premiers travaux de Freud, où les phénomènes de conversion hystérique, de « complaisance » somatique, ainsi que le symptôme comme message basé sur l'identification, à interpréter, s'enracinent dans les signifiants de l'Autre.
La relation entre le symptôme et le signifiant a été travaillée et retravaillée sous beaucoup d'angles par Lacan, jusqu'à ce qu'elle occupe, au moment du Séminaire XX, une place dont le réel dans le langage détermine l'articulation.

Éric Laurent, dans son ouvrage L'envers de la biopolitique, pose la question de cette façon :
« Quel est l'inconscient auquel Lacan arrive dans son dernier enseignement, qui n'est plus fondé sur l'Autre comme champ de signifiants et sur l'identification qui fait exister ce champ ? »[1]

L'accent mis sur l'indéchiffrable et l'écriture à la base d'une rencontre contingente, décomplète cet Autre comme champ de signifiants et se concentre sur l'effet perceptible de lalangue sur le corps.

Dans le séminaire XX, Lacan demande : " […] la formalisation de la logique mathématique, si bien faite à ne se supporter que de l'écrit, ne peut-elle nous servir dans le procès analytique, en ceci que s’y désigne ça qui retient les corps invisiblement ? […] Leur écriture même constitue un support qui va au-delà de la parole, sans sortir des effets même du langage"[2]
Dans cette formulation, l'articulation du corps, du langage et de l'écriture tient compte des effets perçus dans le corps, au-delà de la parole. L'algèbre lacanienne est une écriture formelle de ces effets qui sont commémorés comme un traumatisme, l'écriture de ce qui n'est pas écrit – comme un symptôme.
Elle offre un au-delà des effets de sens du signifiant dans lequel le déchiffrage a sa prévalence et s'ouvre vers l'Un de l'infinitude, la jouissance du corps sans l'Autre.
La dimension réelle de l'inconscient correspond à lalangue et ses pures équivoques, avec lesquelles le corps déchiffre le traumatisme d'une rencontre avec ce qui ne peut être écrit.

Le symptôme, comme relation et nouage de l'Imaginaire, du Symbolique et du Réel, hors du sens ou de la connaissance, n'est pas un message à l’Autre et de l'Autre, non plus interprétable, mais résultat nécessaire de la rencontre du corps avec lalangue.

En tant que retour du refoulé s’appuyant sur les signifiants de mon histoire, j’inventai mon symptôme dès la tendre enfance. Le désir de ma mère permit que mon symptôme trouva à s’épanouir dans le projet de devenir prêtre, avec pour conséquence de me voir refuser l’accès à l’autre sexe, façon métaphorique d’assumer la castration.Il y avait pour moi urgence à entrer en analyse… comme on rentre au séminaire.

Mon analyse démarra en trombe par une production de l’inconscient, un rêve qui avait surgi à la suite d’une intervention de l’analyste et relevait du cauchemar.

J’en donne le récit :
« Je déambule dans le couloir du Refuge de la Sainte Famille – c’est l’hôpital où ma mère a accouché de tous ses enfants. Ce couloir a la forme de la lettre L, il est carrelé en damier, des carreaux branlants, noirs et blancs. Je me déplace en veillant à ne pas marcher sur les joints. Je ressens tout à coup le besoin pressant d’uriner. Les toilettes sont à l’angle du L. Elles se présentent avec deux portes, une sur chaque côté du L. Il faut choisir une porte. Je pénètre dans les toilettes et me mets à uriner dans la cuvette sans pouvoir m’arrêter. La cuvette déborde et je me réveille en train d’uriner au lit. »

Comme on s’en aperçoit, dans ce récit, s’isole la lettre L, lettre prélevée dans une missive qui présida à l’union de mes parents. « Occupe-toi d’elle » avait écrit mon oncle, amant de ma mère, à son frère, avant de se faire tuer à la guerre. Son frère devint donc mon père. Cette lettre L, surgie de l’inconscient au moment du rêve d’entrée dans la cure… je l’isolais. Cette lettre L ne constitue pas seulement une identification « tu es cela » mais un je souis cela dans mon corps. Cet L est ce qui noue la lettre au corps. On voit que le L, qui revient trois fois dans le rêve, est une équivoque, ELLE, dont je fais mon nom de jouissance, mon sinthome. Sinthome qui insistera par ailleurs pendant toute la durée de la cure, sous la forme du symptôme de la marche sur les bordures des trottoirs.

Concernant le rêve, la réduction du sens efface le mythe et donc la domination de l’Autre et de la modalité du nécessaire. Cette réduction permet alors une écriture qui est hors sens et liée au ravinement du noyau traumatique contingent qui fait l’« os » du sinthome.

To name what can staple the knot

I invented my symptom from early childhood as a return of the repressed based on the signifiers of my history. My mother's desire made it possible for my symptom to flourish in the project of becoming a priest, with the consequence of my being denied access to the other sex, a metaphorical way of assuming castration. There was an urgency for me to enter into analysis… as one enters the seminary.

My analysis got off to a flying start by a production of the unconscious, a dream that had arisen as a result of the analyst’s intervention and turned into a nightmare.

I give the account of it here:
"I wander through the corridor of the Refuge de la Sainte Famille – it's the hospital where my mother gave birth to all of her children. This corridor has the shape of the letter L, it is tiled in checkerboard, loose black and white tiles. I move around taking care not to step on the joints. I suddenly feel the urge to urinate. The toilet is at the corner of the L. It has two doors, one on each side of the L. It is necessary to choose a door. I enter the toilet and start urinating in the bowl without being able to stop. The bowl overflows and I wake up urinating in bed.”

As we can see, in this account, the letter L, taken from a letter that presided over the union of my parents, is isolated. My uncle, my mother's lover, had written to his brother – before he was killed in the war – "Take care of her". So his brother became my father. This letter L, which arose from the unconscious at the moment of the dream of entering the cure… I isolated it. This letter L is not only an identification "you are that" but an I submit [je souis] to that in my body. This L is what ties the letter to the body. We see that the L, which comes back three times in the dream, is an equivocation, ELLE [SHE], of which I make my name of jouissance, my sinthome. Sinthome that will also insist throughout the duration of the cure, in the form of the symptom of walking on the curbs of footpaths.

Concerning the dream, the reduction of meaning erases the myth and thus the domination of the Other and the modality of the necessary. This reduction then allows a writing that is outside of meaning and linked to the gullying of the contingent traumatic nucleus which makes the “bone” of the sinthome.
