 Returning to Lacan’s Seminar XVII
We now read Jacques Lacan’s seventeenth seminar from “the other side” of a fifty-year gap separating us from its initial delivery, at the Place du Panthéon, in the academic year 1969-1970. This is factually the case, yet viewing it this way is akin to looking down the wrong end of a telescope: the seminar appears to recede away from us into a distorted distance, as if of interest primarily to historians.

This volume aims to do the reverse (l’envers): namely, to return to Seminar XVII by turning the lens it provides us with onto our present, bringing it—and ourselves as contemporary readers of Lacan—into critical and clinical focus. It does so by bringing together, for the first time anywhere in English, twelve members of the New Lacanian School whose systematic readings of each unfolding session of Seminar XVII are rooted not in social, cultural, or political history, but in the living clinic of the present with which analytic practice is necessarily involved.

What's New?
AMP Uqbar in a new guise!
The Newsletter of the World Association of Psychoanalysis is keeping its name: Uqbar, named after "TLÖN, UQBAR, ORBIS TERTIUS", the strange short story by Borges which inspired the WAP.

It has now become AMP Uqbar News. It informs, gathers together, and shares:

– events of the seven Schools: programme and place
– psychoanalytic praxis in the world: from day to day
– publications: news and sources

And it will keep its focus on "the unconscious is politics".

See you soon,

The Bureau of the WAP

Christiane Alberti, President
Laurent Dupont, Secretary
France Jaigu, Treasurer

NOUVELLE ÉCOLE LACANIENNE DE PSYCHANALYSE
NEW LACANIAN SCHOOL OF PSYCHOANALYSIS

The moment is here!

Register for the QUESTION OF THE

 SCHOOL of the NLS

And engage with the questions debated in the NLS

What is the desire to know that animates a psychoanalyst?

And how does it find its basis in one’s own “not wanting to know anything about it”?

When, where and how do we encounter the “impasses of civilisation”?
Must we take a stand? And how can we act?

What is this “new normal” promised post-COVID?
In work, in gender and in sex?
Utilitarianism at every level?

STUDY CARTEL EVENTS IN THE NLS

The cartel constitutes one of the three pillars of analytic training, along with personal analysis and supervision. Jacques Lacan proposed the cartel formula in his School as the basic organ for the elaboration of new knowledge.

Anyone interested in psychoanalysis can work in a cartel; which must have “at least three people, five at most, four being the right balance, plus-One…. "1

On the NLS website

you can find in the cartels section:
the form to declare your cartel, the thematic headings to register it, the form to register a cartel towards the congress of the NLS 2023, “Discontent and Anxiety in the clinic and in civilization”
       the catalogue of existing cartels
       basic texts on cartels
the 4+One Newsletter of cartels and the possibility to propose a text for the next newsletter

We invite you to the next working events on cartels, via zoom:

Saturday 18 February a French-speaking event, 3 pm to 5.30 pm GMT+1

Sunday 19 March an English-speaking event, 4 pm to 6.30 pm GMT

LCE Volume 6, Issue 5: "It Needs Three to Be" by Sophie Marret-Maleval is now online.

LCE Volume 6, Issue 5: "It Needs Three to Be" by  Sophie Marret-Maleval

In a presentation on October 30, 2022, to Lacanian Compass towards the Clinical Study Days, The Empire of the Images, Sophie Marret-Maleval elucidates aspects of the subjective position from the perspective of Lacan's reading of The Ravishing of Lol Stein, Marguerite Duras' masterpiece. In this conference, the presenter remarked that the ball scene in which the character, Lol V. Stein, was trapped into a traumatic scene, was crucial to a possible development of a subjective position. She was the object of shame, but at the same time the voyeur of a loving encounter between her fiancé and a charming woman. All turns around the gaze, and this object gaze becomes a mark in Lol's experience as an abandoned woman. Sophie takes the function of the narrator in the story, pointed by Lacan, as a subject that gives consistency to Lol as an object. From being invisible, she appears in the scene of the social bond. This emphasizes the importance of the imaginary in the construction of the fantasy. Lacan distinguishes the object a from i(a) and their relation to desire or the absence of it. For Lol V. Stein, there is a dress of another character that gives consis- tency to a body. This dress becoming a wordhole for this character, more than a fetishistic object, becomes the veil of a feminine body that couldn't exsist.

« THE NEW NORMAL » – Conférence d'AURÉLIE PFAUWADEL

« Ainsi, la vraie volonté de savoir caractéristique de notre modernité n'est pas du tout à chercher du côté de la psychanalyse, mais bien plutôt dans cette idéologie totalitaire de l'évaluation ! C'est là que la face surmoïque de cette volonté apparaît dans toute sa férocité aveugle. »

— A. Pfauwadel, Lacan versus Foucault, La psychanalyse à l'envers des normes, Paris, CERF, 2022, p. 344.

THE NEW NORMAL– Lecture by AURÉLIE PFAUWADEL

Thus, the true 'will to know' characteristic of our modernity is not to be found at all in psychoanalysis, but rather in this totalitarian ideology of evaluation! It is there that the superego face of this 'will' appears in all its blind ferocity.

— A. Pfauwadel, Lacan versus Foucault, La psychanalyse à l'envers des normes, Paris, CERF, 2022, p. 344.
