L’urgence à l’adolescence

Tom Margalit

Echoes of the Radetzky March: It Is Urgent to Start the Dialogue

Yannis Dimitrakos

We, Europeans, are the inhabitants of this improbable
Babel that the diversity of language and traditions
continue to enrich and enthusiastically animate.
Emmanuel Macron, The Speech at the Pnyx

While thinking about the end of the multi-ethnic Hapsburg Empire, at least as Joseph Roth has conceived it in his masterpiece novel, The Radetzky March [1] a question emerged: Are we, too, living a similar “moment of dissolution” in Europe today?

Because the questions remain. How is it possible to unite national individualities with different ideals and diverse traditions so that each one of them continues its own singular life and, at the same time, limit their national sovereignty sufficiently in order to enable peaceful and effective international cooperation? [2] How is it possible, as psychoanalysis teaches us, for so many different ways of jouissance to find a common way of co-ordination and co-existence? For those of us who know that we are being jealous of something in the other to the point of hatred and the need to destroy, [3] that the true lack of tolerance is nothing but the lack of tolerance of the jouissance of the Other; for those of us who face “the jouissance of the parlêtre with l’apparole, seeking the possibility of an existence that is not without the pathway of some desire”; [4] for those of us who interpret: What is our duty as psychoanalysts? It is urgent to start the dialogue.

On 20 March 2019, in Stoa tou Bibliou, the Hellenic Society of the NLS posed these questions for which we did not have a predetermined response, but just the desire to start a conversation with other interlocutors coming from different fields that are focused on democracy in Europe, its crisis and its future.

Changing Place

Chris Alexandris

I remember my first time so well! I’m not talking about my… “first time”, of course. I am talking about the day I first sat on a wooden chair in front of my analyst. “I’m listening to you” he told me. “I have a lot of problems.” These were my first words in his office.

A choice. The urgency was to make a choice. I had to choose between two women. As they say in Greece, “The knot had arrived at the end of the comb.” I did not have any more time. I needed an immediate response; it had become essential to make a choice, without delay. I had to choose The woman.

Full of anguish, I stared at the lips of my analyst, hoping to hear The solution. He did not say a word. But I remember laughing as I walked back to my car. It took me a whole month to make a decision and make up my mind. And it was so much easier for me to make that choice once my analyst went on vacation! I chose impulsively, hastily, as I had done throughout my whole life. Impulse was the common denominator of all my actions. It took me three years to hear my analyst telling me that I was not impulsive {αυθόρμητος-afthormitos}, as I had always believed, but compulsive {παρορμητικός-parormitikos}.

He simply changed the place of the letters and my position changed. My whole life changed. Ορμή-ormi – the momentum, the impulse, the drive – changed status. Since that session, I have no longer been impulsive, but compulsive. The urgency of my choices, my actions, did not disappear; it was simply displaced. I mean, I did not stop being in a hurry.

My analyst proceeded to transform the map of my drives via the substitution of the letters “im” {αυθ-afth} by the letters “co” {παρ-par}; he revised it completely. I now have a new point of orientation, a new point to guide the drives whose satisfaction is urgent. The letter, since this session, has become my compass, my guide, my “drive.” In fact, it is impossible for me to choose “The” woman. But “a” woman ? “A”  certain woman? It is more possible now.

Urgency: ¡Never the Same!

Florencia F. C. Shanahan

What kind of punctuation corresponds to the urgency of the end of analysis? Once the fundamental fantasy has been traversed, a zone emerges where the desire of the analyst is most fundamentally put to the test. It is a delicate zone prone to the (di)versions of the act as isolated by Lacan (acting out and passage to the act) and their risks.

I think it is because of this that Jacques-Alain Miller emphasized long ago that the end of analysis is not a full stop, but a torsion, when he gave us his syntagm, “from symptom to fantasy and back”. The urgent case that one once was does not resolve itself in the contemplation of the marks that commemorate one’s singular troumatisme. There is still the effort to invent a link to the Other, now incomplete and hollowed. There is still the leap towards the new that brings one out from the temptation to moebiously remain on the other side of what the passion for ignorance and the horror for knowledge had been, namely, the fascination with what is no longer ignored and which constitutes one’s jouissance.

The transmission of the Analysts of the School teach us that the urgency of the end of analysis can take up a myriad of forms; from a palpitating blaze to a discreet whisper, from the subtle drying up to the hustling precipitation, from the certainty extracted in a lightening to the vitality that pours from the slit opened by the separation from the object thus mourned.

There is no punctuation mark that would account for this encounter, for this surprise.

A door that’s banged, two hands that shake, the shared laughter before the irremediable Witz, a word caught in the air to never be seen again… That there was something of the psychoanalyst [du psychanalyste] at stake will find its demonstration in the après-coup; not so much through its logical strength or the solidity of its argument, but through the potency of the echo it may produce – this desire – in the bodies able to lodge it in the Lacanian procedure of the pass.

The urgency of the parlêtre is, just like the letter and the woman, always One.
One which is, however, never the same.
