Urgency in Addictions

Lacan uses the term urgency in his Rome Report: “Nothing created appears without urgency; nothing in urgency fails to surpass itself in speech.”[1]
 
Urgency is often the impetus to the creation of new institutional frameworks, as much in the clinic as in politics. In Switzerland in the 90s, where “open drug scenes” in Swiss-German towns saw dramatic fatal drug overdoses and the HIV epidemic, they opted for the creation of a care network for drug addicts, and for reducing risks.
 
In addiction, every drink is always the one too many, and always the same one. J.-A. Miller calls this iteration, and not repetition, because it does not refer to either sense or meaning; it is pure jouissance. The subject addresses himself to someone in order to complain, but does not question the sense or the meaning of what it affords him. “The subject is at that point linked to a cycle of repetition, whose separate instances cannot be added up and the experiences teach him nothing. This is what one calls addiction today. And one calls it addiction precisely because it is not an addition.”[2]
 
Addiction often seems like a solution and not the problem for the “addict” subject, who does not come to seek help for a long time. But at a particular moment the “solution” does not work anymore and becomes problematic. It is then that the subject takes a step in order to seek help, in an “urgent” manner. Urgent can reveal itself at the level of the body that does not resist anymore, as well as in the surfacing of anxiety, the motor of subjective urgency and a demand to address the Other.
 
The reception of this urgency, starting from the subject’s speech in a clinic under transference, is fundamental. It differs from the application of a pre-established protocol, which is widespread in institutions and can freeze up the coordinates of the treatment.

“We Come Back from Session to Session because It Pushes"

For more than a decade, he jumped into his vehicle in the nighttime and into the early morning eating up 600 km of road every Friday to get to and from sessions at his analyst.
 
That was it! Something pushed him to go, without asking any questions, in this place which materialized not only the radical difference but also – above all – the presence of the analyst put into action.
 
It was neither the transference nor the interpretations that supported these comings and goings, but the discovery of an incarnated presence at the same time as the re-finding of a place empty of meaning that the analysand had to make ethical use of.
 
One day, during a session, he was astonished by the “urgent” character (he systematically passed the speed limit) of his displacements. They were beyond any critical analysis, calculated thoughts, or other conscious intentions. He had to go; he could not say more. Today, he thinks he remembers that the analyst responded to him by ending the session.

Going towards the Tel Aviv Congress!

“You were born so fast!” she always told me. “If we spent any time between the first bottle and the second, you started crying and didn’t want to be feed any more. So we gave you the second bottle immediately!” The encounter of language with the body is always untimely, too early or too late, it’s never the right time. And this mark will determine the way the subject will experience or symptomatize the relationship with time. The subject’s mode of jouissance is twisted with time and that gives a style.

In my case, the anxiety of motherhood (I was pregnant) produced the subjective urgency to go to analysis. It shook the identification with “being a mother,” used since adolescence after the birth of two small brothers. This identification was perfect to cover the enigma of the parlêtre’s spring awakening and the flowering of the enigmatic feminine jouissance.

Lacanian analysis deals with a time that ex-sists in relation to chronological time, and with the cut of the session, punctuations and scansions, it aims at the real. Precipitation was a symptomatic way to cancel the time for understanding, with the price of suffering its consequence.

Anxiety about the feminine was the final declension of analysis. The feminine is the point of maximum heterogeneity and contingent for both sexes. But although it is impossible to say, it is transmitted, for example, on the basis of a body event or in the resonating chamber constituted by the cartel of the pass with an Analyst of the School.

Now, I can wait for contingency, which always arrives, but without expecting anything – let’s say, without any previous knowledge or fictional coverings. 

 
Now, the parlêtre is pushed forward! Towards the Schools of the WAP, its events, and also towards writing. The sinthome goes forward with a quick style, in a solitude that encounters other solitudes in the Schools. It’s a new satisfaction that pushes, maybe in the Real of time. A libidinal time, linked to the trou-matism of lalangue.
 
And so, I’ll see you in Tel Aviv!

De d à D. Non du désir à la pulsion mais de la jouissance d’un dandy, via la chute de l’objet a comme semblant i(a) et l’explosion concomitante d’une angoisse abyssale, jusqu’à la réintroduction du manque comme cause du désir : la résurgence ou rés-urgence de D comme le signifiant quelconque permettant la reconstitution de la chaîne signifiante qui, à ce moment d’urgence de mon analyse avait été interrompue par l’impact traumatique d’un symptôme qui ne fonctionnait plus, l’iconoclasme de i(a). Tout concourait à une immense confusion et à une crise engendrée par l’échec de ma vie amoureuse, d’où l’apparition de l’inefficacité de ce symptôme – une femme du nom de « F » comme dans Père [Father] – qui avait jusqu’alors servi d’ancrage au réseau symbolique de ma vie : La femme est l’un des Noms-du-Père. Cependant la femme est aussi le symptôme de l’homme, l’image fantasmatique d’une figure d’où extraire de la jouissance au détriment du désir. Ma sortie de la crise accompagnée d’un état d’angoisse se manifesta clairement sous la forme d’un instant de ponctuation ou d’intervention de l’analyste qui tout simplement, de manière surprenante mais d’autant plus percutante, prononça « D » au moment où mon désir s’était rétabli. À ce moment décisif de mon analyse, ne trouvant aucun signifiant auquel avoir recours, aucune toile de fond sur laquelle mon désir pouvait se constituer au lieu de l’Autre, j’en appelai à l’urgence d’une intervention de la part de mon analyste.  « D » tout simplement est devenu ce signifiant, mon nom propre sur lequel la chaîne signifiante a pu à nouveau se stabiliser, me permettant de poursuivre mon analyse et d’explorer de nouvelles directions de vie.

Note on an Analytical Experience of Urgency

From d to D. Not from desire to drive, but from the jouissance of a dandy, via the fall of object a as semblant i(a) and the concomitant explosion of unfathomable anxiety, to the reintroduction of lack as cause of desire: the resurgence or re-urgence of ”D” as le signifiant quelconque, allowing for the reconstitution of the signifying chain which, at this moment of urgency in my analysis, had been broken by the traumatic impact of a symptom no longer working, the iconoclasm of i(a). My case was made for an immense confusion and crisis engendered by the failure of my love life, hence the dawning inefficacy of that symptom—a woman named ”F” as in Father—which had heretofore served as the anchoring of the symbolic nexus of my life: woman is one of the Names-of-the-Father. However, woman is also man’s symptom, the fantasmatic image of a figure from which to derive jouissance at the expense of desire. My way out of this crisis, and the state of anxiety that accompanied it, came to the fore by way of an instant of punctuation or intervention on the part of my analyst, who simply, surprisingly but all the more powerfully uttered ”D” at a moment where my desire was to find its feet anew. At this decisive moment in my analysis, I found that there was no signifier to fall back on, no backdrop for my desire to be constituted in the locus of the Other, calling for the urgency of my analysts intervention. ”D” simply became that signifier—my proper name—on which to stabilise the signifying chain anew, allowing me to continue analysis and the exploration of new directions of life.

The Urgency in the Cure

The enthusiasm that characterizes the first phase of an analysis is often mentioned. The subject discovers the delights of truth (he does not yet know that it is a lying truth). If there is urgency, henceforth it takes the form of an urgency for meaning, to discover the meaning of his desire, to give sense to his being. The matheme of subjective urgency would be the production of knowledge as illustrated by the discourse of the hysteric: the subject as want to be, (S barred), questions the master signifiers of his history, the master-signifiers of the Other, (S1), to produce knowledge, (S2), that is to say signifying articulations that make sense. Symbolic urgency is above all the urgency with which the hysterised subject is animated.

The urgency for meaning is an anechoic urgency, muted. One could also say that it has a certain plasticity, that it follows the modulations of the transference. On the other hand, there is not an element of haste here, or the sentimentality that characterizes the imaginary urgency of healing. This is not to say for a moment that the analyst is not implicated. In this context, the analytic act consists in maintaining the work of the analysand in a state of urgency. An interpretation of Freud to a patient, illustrates this point well: “I have no time to lose!” In other words, while allowing the subject to take his time, the analyst must implicitly preserve a major imperative of the analytic experience: one has no time to lose!

If the implicit urgency that animates the analytic experience seems motivated by the quest for meaning, it gradually becomes impregnated by the dimension of jouissance, by an inmixing of the libido. By adding meaning, we make jouissance happen. By constructing his “I am” in signifying terms, the subject makes it appear that he “enjoys of himself [se jouit]” as an object. Thus, the logic of the cure extends from an urgency for meaning to an urgency for the real of jouissance. This is reflected in the discourse of the analyst, formalised by Lacan in Seminar XVII: the isolation of the master-signifiers, (S1), as separate from any articulation, is equivalent to a fall [chute] of jouissance. In the long term, the exhaustion of the joui-sense makes a beyond meaning [hors-sense] appear – which is the origin of the relation of the parlêtre to the language.
