L'EUROFÉDÉRATION DE PSYCHANALYSE
Forum Européen de Milan

AFTER MILAN – APRES COUP OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE EFP ON THE EUROPEAN FORUM OF FEBRUARY 16th, 2019

During Saturday, February 16th, the European Forum of Psychoanalysis Love and Hate for Europe was held in Milan, in the Aula Magna of the University of Studies. It was the third European Forum held in Italy under the auspices of the Movida Zadig, after the initial Forum made at Turin on November 10th, 2017 about Decided desires of Democracy in Europe and the following event held on this regard, that was held in Rome on February 24th, 2018 about The foreign. This series of European Forums that have been held in Italy – to which is attached a plenary session on psychoanalysis and politics at the last national congress of the SLP that was held in Bologna in June 2018 – has fulfilled an itinerary throughout the Italian peninsula, itinerary that was drawn by Jacques-Alain Miller at his first founding meeting of Movida Zadig and that has been fulfilled with this last Forum in Milan. The Euro-federation of Psychoanalysis has followed from the forefront the construction and commissioning of the Forum, effectively managed by Marco Focchi and in constant synergy with the Scuola Lacaniana di Psicoanalisi, particularly with the community of Milan, with its members and participants, whom have taken charge in first person of the organization of these events. The Freudian Institute has not failed to support the company. The other European Schools, in turn, have contributed to the good performance of the event, with the participation and presence of their presidents in the works and with the presence of many colleagues from abroad (more than a quarter of the Forum participants). The WAP as well, has followed the Forum project from the beginning, the presence of its president Angelina Harari has embodied its participation in the event. Eric Laurent with his closing remarks on Europe to the test of hatred, has extracted – in a masterful way – the lines of the discourse developed during this journey.

The Milan Forum has not disappointed the expectations of those who have participated; leading to a positive conclusion of the cycle started at Turin. The Italian media have shown interest in the event, giving prominence to it in the most important national newspapers, in primis Il Corriere della Sera. It has been preceded by a rich preparatory debate in which more than 400 people have attended in person to this work. The external guests to the field of psychoanalysis – philosophers, historians, economists, jurists, intellectuals, officials in the context of the European Community policies – have been taken subjectively into the work of the Forum, actively involved in the conversation setted up by us on this occasion. The idea has been to involve the psychoanalysts in a questioning position in such a way that they could interact with the text and the speakers' words in order to achieve an internal dynamic, creating a debate among them, causing a hysterization effect in the discourse in order to extract the outgoing elements. This has produced the effect of making alive the crisis of Europe that we are going through, probing the symptomatic scope and possible drifts, highlighting the impact on collective passions, in a logical time where its political project is not reducible to economic functioning, therefore the importance of being able to question it. After decades of idealization and relative indifference, we are facing a crucial moment for Europe where the real is put to the test.

We now have to think about how to reap the rewards and how to relaunch the work of the series of European Forums developed here – the three Italians, but also the one from Brussels on the Discourses that kill – has allowed us to produce, maintaining heretical our action and making it more incisive in the field of politics.

APRES MILAN.

The Urgency of the Entry into Analysis

Anne Béraud

The veil of fantasy was torn. It failed to protect against the real of anxiety. The object without representation coming to fill the lack, anxiety arose. The first traumatic instant of the glance connected to the real unconscious, led me into the analysis via the urgency to get out of it, that is to say by first veiling it by restoring the signifying chain S1 – S2, with meaning.

So I ran to an analyst at the age of twenty-four years after the breakup of a love affair that had lasted four years. The coordinates of the separation had exposed the fantasy. In the final scene, in the street, clinging to him, he had to drop me. The fantasmatic scenario was complete: to make myself seen as a dropped object. To extract this phrase, years of analysis, strewn with the pitfalls of maternal ravage and its repetition in my married life, were necessary.

Living in a couple had confronted me with the dissatisfaction that left no room for the impossible, and with my fierce determination to make the sexual relation exist. Above all, I wanted this complementarity of desire and love with a man. I ran into this nameless impossible that confused me. It enraged me and gave consistency to a wall that I then located between my mother and me. My symptomatic attachment to the Other through relentlessly making the wall of the sexual relation consist was the echo of an early traumatic event, which then knotted itself to two statements, one maternal, one paternal that allowed the construction of the fantasy.

          Urgency in Austria

          Sophie Steininger

The Lacanian analytic community in Austria, being founded in 2009, is still young. My involvement in it has become a vital part of my life. Since that moment I began my analysis, stemming from a personal urgency, the existence of the analytic community, the Neues Lacan’sches Feld Österreich – Initiative Vienna, has become to me a matter of urgency, as if my life depends on it. I feel that being part of an analytic community is indispensable for my work as a psychoanalyst, and more than that, the Lacanian discourse in the social community in Austria puts into questions many things that otherwise would go without speaking.

Without really being fully aware of it, I have acted according to this urgency, helping to build and shape and contribute to the Lacanian field in Austria as well as I can, even at great personal cost, financial and otherwise. Something pushes me to move forward, sometimes in spite of myself, and even though the success is in no way guaranteed. This is not like a smart, sensitive, carefully considered career choice, it’s an act of creation of something that is foreign. There is no Other that can guarantee that the Neues Lacan’sches Feld Österreich – Initiative Vienna will continue to work, but there are its members, including myself, and the desire to work, with the help of work-transference, and there is the connection to the NLS that links our initiative to a larger community.

          Urgency, Sometimes a Blunder

          Claudia Iddan

Lacan teaches us that urgency presides over all analysis, but urgency can also be present in the life of a community.

What precedes the act is, of course, urgency; that is to say, in urgency time is compressed into a conclusion that arises after the “moment of seeing” and of “understanding.” Sometimes this precedes the moment of the act if there is a real change of subjective position, a separation from the Other.

What is the place of sometimes in the sentence? Its purpose is to emphasize that the urgency related to action does not necessarily lead to the act. In Arabic there is the saying, “haste is the domain of the devil.” The expression of the idea of the devil is to me synonymous with the death drive. Indeed, in certain situations where action is preceded by urgency, one sometimes confuses the act and the passage to the act [le passage à l’acte].

The act creates a new subject from the moment it is situated in a discourse, which addresses the other, paradoxically, from a new position. This promotes the creation of a new symbolic fiction that can advance the discourse, whereas the passage to the act involves a letting fall, an exclusion capable of destroying this fiction and bringing out the real – the malaise in discourse.

In urgency, the intervention of the analyst, whether in the context of the analysis or in that of the life of a community, can push to the passage to the act, to admitting his point of view which excludes on his part the possibility of listening. The dimension of speech can find itself in danger and this can undo the link to the point of a break that would lead us to not being able to guarantee the continuation of the work, whether in analysis or in the life of a community.

“The Unbewust, that is to say the unconscious. In German, this means unconscious, but translated by blunder [une bévue] it means something else, it means a stumbling, a tripping up, a sliding from word to word, and that is what is concerned when we mistakenly use the wrong key to open a door that precisely this key does not open”. [1] Lacan adds that consciousness is the only support for these blunders. Indeed, urgency is sometimes likely to lead to error, to the sliding in the death drive, a position that does not allow us to “be a good pair” with the community or an analysand, in order to “be on a par” [2] with them, but on the contrary allows us to reveal certain elements of the fantasy.
