The Urgency of a Living Body

Marina Frangiadaki

The plane touches down. I grab my suitcase and I race to my analytic sessions, my supervisions, the activities of the School. After fifteen years in Paris, it’s been a while now since I moved to Athens and I continue the analysis with a rhythm of short stays.

A repeated urgency operates, linked to a satisfaction of the deciphering of the unconscious in an analysis that has produced a change of subjective position and extraordinary therapeutic effects for the subject.

I arrive in the quartier of the analyst’s office. For once, I decide to have a coffee before going there. In this pause, I begin to sing a song from my early childhood. A love song whose chorus expresses an unconditional love: “I decided that without you I could not live.” The little girl that I was used to sing this song to her mother, but she had transformed the lyrics into a renewing looping of syllables outside of meaning, accompanied by a jouissance of lalangue. This gave a refrain where the negation of the sentence was effaced: “[…] without you I can live.” A declaration of love with a will of separation from the Other.

I recount it in the session; I broach the transference: “I thought you would be here, for life [là, à vie].” Cut of the session.

The phrase, “here for life [là à vie]” resonates differently decomposed with its equivocation. I sketch a writing of a knot of the transference.

Là, La femme – Here, The woman, whom the analyst had incarnated for a time for the analysand in search of the mystery of femininity.

à – the object a that I had lodged with the analyst, and notably the object voice, having long suffered from a tenacious symptom that prevented me from speaking.

VieLife, the sentiment of life, or a real whose quest for meaning was an impasse. In fact, this is the subjective urgency that led me to analysis, an urgency of life and death.

Consequently, the urgency arises under the mode of another satisfaction: that of a body [corps], again, [encore], my living body which is displaced in a desiring circuit.

On Wednesday, 9 January 2019 in Tel Aviv, we held a Zadig evening under the title, “The Occupation, Beyond the Left and the Right” with two prominent guests: Haaretz journalist Gideon Levy, known as Israel’s most controversial journalist with his severe critical positions for the right, but also for the left, which according to him no longer exists, and Shaul Arieli, ex-colonel of the Israel Defence Forces (IDF), former member of peace commissions with the Palestinians, who has a thorough knowledge of the field including small and large details of disputes. Our friend Itzhak Benyamini, editor with Resling (the publishing house which publishes Lacan’s Écrits), accompanied me at the table and was an excellent moderator of the passionate exchanges in front of the audience.

Gideon Levy was of the idea that it is already too late for a “two-state solution for the two peoples”, that the evacuation of settlements in the territories would be impossible, and that one would have to necessarily get accustomed to the idea of a single democratic state with equivalent rights for Palestinians and Israelis. Shaul Arieli considered for his part that it is still possible to make the right separation. He explained this with his knowledge of innumerable details of the terrain. Gideon Levy argued against this by mentioning the present political paralysis, the complete indifference, and even the repression – he used the word – of the majority of Israelis for whom there is little distance between places of work and leisure.

According to the participants, the debate was very good, managing to keep its distance from party politics, despite or perhaps thanks to the extreme positions of our speakers.

As I write this text, we are already preparing for the next Zadig meeting. A new friend, the journalist Oren Nahari, specializing in Israeli international politics, wrote to me that he fears the impossibility of holding a discussion without taking up the positions of right or left. I responded, inspired by our dear François Leguil, whom we had invited to give a seminar two weeks ago at the Shiba military hospital. In order to introduce the difference between the real unconscious and the transferential unconscious, he told us how Freud was so moved by Charcot’s saying, “Theory is good, but it doesn’t prevent things from existing”1 that at the dreadful moment when he had to abandon Vienna under the persecution of the Nazis, he did not forget to take along with him to his London clinic the famous illustration of Charcot’s presentation of hysterical patients at the Salpêtrière hospital in Paris. “Dear Oren”, I wrote to him, “you were not present for this Zadig debate, so it’s good that you are dreading the impossibility of such discourse in Israel. But, because of your absence, it is only theoretical, and that does not prevent it from existing.” This is the same answer I have waiting for the BDS [Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement] policy theorists.

Subjective Urgency and Object Little a

Frank Rollier

In his paper on “Logical Time,” Lacan talks about “the urgency of the moment of concluding.”1 In Vulgar Latin, urgens means what cannot be delayed. This moment, proposes Jacques-Alain Miller, is a “sudden reversal” of expectation into urgency, which is “prescribed by the very signifier’s structure,” because then “there is some lack in the signifier.” This lack is going to be “supplemented” by the urgency to conclude, thus giving haste, or urgency, “the status of an object little a.2 What does that state?

Object little a is a concept which, says Miller, “inserts life into the mortified signifying chain,”3 as it appears specifically in the fantasy’s mathem. Thus, urgency rhymes with life – this is what Lacan highlights when he translates Freud’s words, die Not des Lebens by “life’s urgency.”4 He also points out that “nothing created appears without urgency.”5 “Life’s urgency” first brings color to subjective urgency, then to the treatment itself.

However, this status of object little a also indicates a loss.6 In a state of urgency, the subject separates himself from the anxiety and perplexity caused by a traumatic break in the signifying chain. Subjective urgency has the character of an act, which is an opening towards the Other: “nothing in urgency fails to surpass itself in speech.”7 This move, which goes against the passion of ignorance and departs from a passage to the act, is an urgency to say. Then, the subject’s anxiety may start to calm down.
