 L'EUROFÉDÉRATION DE PSYCHANALYSE

 THE EVENTS

PIPOL 9

Call for Contributions

For the Clinical Study-day

(Parallel sessions)

Of PIPOL 9

Closing date: 25th of March 2019

From Europe and beyond, practitioners of psychoanalysis, or those who orient themselves by its ethics, you who work in private practice, consultation centres, care institutions, or in the wider field of the humanities founded on the practice of speech: PIPOL 9 invites you to come and present your clinical work and its consequent effects.

You who make the hypothesis of the unconscious – in the true psychoanalytic sense of the term – you who think that the dimension of transference is essential to the therapeutic relationship, you who know something of the effects of the drive, we are waiting for you.

The brain, via neuroscience, is delivering little by little some of the secrets of its biochemical functioning, until recently unknown. No one is ignoring  this. Nonetheless, when cognitivism is knotted to the neurosciences in order to seize the field of the psyche, the emerging result is a new reductionist paradigm of the human.

By reducing the psychical to a duplicate of the organic, the affects to chemical processes, the brain to an information processing machine, the unconscious to non-conscious processes,  while isolating symptoms by means of statistical series and reducing them to the level of cognitive biases, the dimension of what we call the subject is eradicated from the parlêtre – this is how Jacques Lacan qualified the human species.

Technology’s new tools,  medical imaging and development of artificial intelligence, Big Data and the computing power of algorithms, have an increasing impact on life. New perspectives open up. Also, new alienations are produced.

Imposing itself in the so-called field of mental health, as well as in the so-called social sciences, a discourse without beyond is founded on the human, thus reducing the power of speech to suggestion and conditioning methods. Coaching, cognitive remediation, corrective methods, intensive pedagogies, development of mindfulness, protocolised and imposed fast care circuits, all exist as a promise for a brighter tomorrow of greater efficiency and increased potentiality, more than ever at the service of production, which has become the master-signifier of civilization.

Psychoanalysis isolates the symptom’s rebellious dimension against a reductionism of this part of the human which cannot be measured, which insists and reiterates all the more  as one does not want to know anything about it. Lacan pinned it as object a.

New symptoms are taking shape. These are all answers, protests that demonstrate the impossibility of one’s self-identity, the impasses of control and of self-management of emotions, thought, stress, anxiety and trauma.

The analytic orientation knows the over-determination of these symptoms by the effects of speech on the body. The unconscious is not a non-conscious, pre-existing memory. It is the emergence, in the very moment, of signs of this real which does not belong to the organism; signs that testify to what in one’s own conduct or intention escapes the I and the identifications of the subject, where one finds it difficult to recognize oneself as identical to oneself.

The interventions of the Parallel Sessions of PIPOL 9 will testify, by means of clinical cases, practices founded on the hypothesis of the unconscious – where the administration, seduced by its mission of population management, forces nowadays to embrace the aforementioned reductionist practices  and aims to strangle any practice that claims to keep its distances, by rendering them impossible.

Presenting our evidence, not by statistical series or global management, but on a one-by-one basis, we will thus produce, in vivo, a counter-expertise that will be situated, at the time of the subject.

        An Urgency of Satisfaction

        Jacques-Alain Miller

In any case, “the mirage of truth” has a “terminal point”, that of the real unconscious which can be seen and appreciated from “the satisfaction that marks the end of the analysis”. [1]

It couldn’t have been put more soberly, more delicately. There is an end of analysis when there is satisfaction. This doubtless supposes a transformation of the symptom which, from discomfort and pain, delivers the satisfaction that had been inhabiting and animating it from the start. The criterion is to know how to handle one’s symptom so as to draw satisfaction from it.

Hence the thesis that Lacan formulates as analysis being in charge of [préside] an urgency. This goes farther than coordinating analysis with a demand. What is called demand, from the point of view of the symbolic, is in fact “the request with an urgency”.[2] This is what is gauged in the preliminary interviews. Is there or is there not an urgency for satisfaction? Has the subject reached the point of no longer knowing what to do with his sinthome, apart from the suffering?

        Necessary Punctuations

        Alexandre Stevens

Punctuation marks give structure to sentences and clarify their meaning by introducing pauses and syntactic relations, as well as nuances and surprises. The inverted exclamation point placed before the title of the Congress, ¡Urgent! is just that: it accentuates the surprise.

But we must also punctuate the theme of urgency. Haste is not precipitation. The urgency of subjective assertion is not equal to the urgent pressure of the drive. What is urgent in the symptom cannot be superimposed on the urgency of satisfaction. The movement of a determined desire at the beginning of a cure is not identical to the moment of concluding at the end.

These are the punctuations that this section will welcome.

        Not des Lebens

        Bernard Seynhaeve

In his “Preface to the English edition of Seminar XI,” Lacan articulates two signifiers to try to define what would be the end of the analytic cure. Articulating “emergency cases” and “satisfaction” is not altogether evident.

In order to try to get us to grasp what is involved in this articulation, Jacques-Alain Miller relies on a Lacan reference in Seminar VII, The Ethics of Psychoanalysis to put the accent on the push, the “it presses”, “it urges”, the “will”, the “I want” that can be perceived in the need for satisfaction. In this seminar, Lacan specifies that it is the will to live, a signifier taken up by Freud. “What one finds in das Ding,” says Lacan, “is the true secret. […] If Freud speaks of the reality principle, it is in order to reveal to us that from a certain point of view it is always defeated; it only manages to affirm itself at the margin. And this is so by reason of a kind of pressure that one might say, if things didn’t in fact go much further, Freud calls, not ‘the vital needs’[…] but die Not des Lebens, in the German text. An infinitely stronger phrase. Something that wishes. ‘Need’ and not ‘needs’. Pressure, urgency. The state of Not is the state of emergency in life.” [1]

In this text, Freud had already articulated urgency and satisfaction, the satisfaction that goes beyond the satisfaction of needs and which is what he defines as the urgency of life: “The principle of inertia is, however, broken through from the first owing to another circumstance. With an [increasing] complexity of the interior [of the organism], the nervous system receives stimuli from the somatic element itself – endogenous stimuli – which have equally to be discharged. These have their origin in the cells of the body and give rise to the major needs: hunger, respiration, sexuality. From these the organism cannot withdraw as it does from external stimuli; it cannot employ their Q for flight from the stimulus. They only cease subject to particular conditions, which must be realised in the external world (cf, for instance, the need for nourishment.) In order to accomplish such an action (which deserves to be named ‘specific’), an effort is required which is independent of endogenous and in general greater, since the individual is being subjected to conditions which may be described as the exigencies of life [Not des Lebens].” [2]
