"You are 41 years old and you have not yet become a mother", says the voice off-camera, before a woman asks, desperately, on camera, "What have I done wrong?
The video is announcing to the media the "First Greek National Congress of Fertility and Reproductive Autonomy (sic)", organised under the auspices of the President of the Greek Republic. The Congress scientific committee was supposed to comprise renowned gynaecology professors and was to collaborate with the University Department of Gynaecology. Various health professionals were to participate, as well as journalists, mayors, cabinet ministers, and Orthodox patriarchs.
In reality there existed many loopholes in the regulations concerning medically assisted reproduction. Many Greek and foreign women (couples, singles, lesbians, gays, et al.) had and have access to it, if they can afford it. What could have appeared, as a possibility for a woman to gain access to motherhood when and if she wants it, was appropriated by a conservative and religious political discourse buttressed by the support of scientific discourse. The right of women to be mothers – or not – was thus reduced to an obligation to become a mother.
The announcement of this congress received a lot of media attention, but a protest movement denouncing the underlying ideology quickly spread via social media. Some of the announced participants withdrew, sponsors abandoned the event, and the President of the Greek Republic withdrew her support… To the point that the congress was finally cancelled. Despite which, the temptation persists among those who initiated the congress to demonstrate that The woman exists and that she is a mother!

« Tu as 41 ans et tu n’es pas encore devenue mère », dit la voix off avant qu’une femme ne demande face caméra et d’un air désespéré : « Qu’ai-je donc fait comme faute ? »
La vidéo annonce, dans les médias, le « Premier congrès national grec de fertilité et d’autonomie reproductive (sic) » organisé sous l’égide de la présidence de la République grecque. Son comité scientifique en est composé de Professeurs en gynécologie réputés et en collaboration avec le département de gynécologie de l’Université. Divers professionnels de santé y participent ainsi que des journalistes, des Maires, des Ministres mais aussi des Patriarches orthodoxes.
De fait, la réglementation concernant la procréation médicalement assistée présente des failles. Par ailleurs, de nombreuses femmes grecques et étrangères (en couple, célibataires, lesbiennes, gays, etc.) y ont accès – à condition qu’elles en aient les moyens financiers. Ce qui aurait alors pu se présenter comme une possibilité pour une femme d’un accès à la maternité, quand et si elle le veut, se trouve récupéré par un discours politique conservateur et religieux qui trouve, à l’occasion, le soutien du discours scientifique. Le droit des femmes à être mère, ou pas, se trouve dès lors réduit à un impératif de maternité.
L’annonce de ce congrès a ainsi été très médiatisée, mais un mouvement de protestation qui en dénonçait l’idéologie sous-jacente s’est vite déployé via les réseaux sociaux. Des participants annoncés se sont désistés, des sponsors l’ont abandonné, et la Présidente de la République grecque lui a retiré son soutien… Tant et si bien que le congrès a finalement été annulé. N'empêche, la tentation reste grande de démontrer que La femme existe et que c’est une mère !

El Humor de las mujeres a debate

Recientemente una noticia en El País ha vuelto a poner a debate en la opinión pública el humor hecho por mujeres, en especial sobre las mujeres humoristas. La directora y el gerente de uno de los principales Stand Up de Madrid han justificado su programación (en la que hay una flagrante desproporción entre humoristas hombres y mujeres) con un argumento de peso económico: “las humoristas venden menos y no provocan tantas risas” y ello porque, afirman, “el nivel de las mujeres es más bajo para hacer humor”.
La respuesta de las mujeres concernidas no se ha hecho esperar. Algunas recuerdan su singularidad y rechazan ser incluidas en la denominación “Humor femenino”. El debate se expande por las redes sociales y en distintos artículos. De hecho, las mujeres humoristas tienen un amplio público y crean tendencia[1] ¿Porqué la cuestión del humor femenino persiste en estos términos?[2] ¿Hacer reír banalizaría la discriminación y la igualdad de derechos o la denuncia de las violencias que sufren las mujeres? O ¿Hay algo en el hecho de hacer reír que no correspondería con el goce femenino?
Es interesante constatar que si durante los pasados decenios las mujeres usaban lo cómico del Payaso, estos últimos años, las que triunfan en los Stand Up, usan más la ironía. Ellas se presentan sin renunciar, esconder o matizar, la versión de mujeres que son y sin el tabú a los temas “propiamente femeninos” como lo habían sido la menstruación, la maternidad, las relaciones sexuales, el amor romántico, sus cuerpos. Pueden ser pues graciosas, inteligentes, bellas, agresivas, cultas, emotivas, reivindicativas, provocativas…
El humor permite justamente hablar de lo que no se debería hablar. Como Freud lo aisló, el chiste, Witz, produce la liberación de una satisfacción al saltarse la censura. El humor propiamente dicho, el que recurre a la ironía, introduce un ”sentimiento particularmente liberador y exaltante”, como él mismo dijo[3] El superyó parece decir “¡Mira, he ahí ese mundo que parecía tan peligroso! No es más que un juego de niños, bueno apenas para tomarlo en broma”. ¡Esa es la dignidad del humor!

L’humour des femmes en débat

Une nouvelle parue dans El País a récemment attiré l’attention de l'opinion publique sur l'humour des femmes, et plus spécialement sur les femmes humoristes. Le directeur de l'une des principales salles de Stand-up de Madrid a en effet justifié sa programmation (où apparait une disproportion flagrante entre les humoristes hommes et femmes) en s’appuyant sur un argument économique de poids : « les humoristes femmes se vendent moins et ne provoquent pas autant de rires » que les hommes, et cela parce que « le niveau d’humour des femmes est plus bas » que celui des hommes.
La réponse des femmes en question ne s’est pas faite attendre. Certaines rappellent leur singularité et refusent de se voir incluses dans « l’humour féminin ». Vite le débat se poursuit sur les réseaux sociaux et diverses tribunes. De fait, les femmes humoristes sont suivies par beaucoup des jeunes et créent des tendances[1]. Pourquoi la question de l'humour féminin persiste-t-elle à se poser dans ces conditions[2] ? Le rire banaliserait-il des sujets aussi sérieux que la discrimination et l'égalité des droits ou la dénonciation des violences faites aux femmes ? Ou y a-t-il quelque chose dans le fait de faire rire qui ne correspondrait pas à la jouissance féminine ?
Il est intéressant de constater que si durant les décennies passées, les femmes en passaient souvent par le comique du clown, ces dernières années, celles qui réussissent dans le Stand up ont plutôt recourt à l'ironie. Elles se présentent par ailleurs sans renier, cacher ou nuancer leur version de la femme, et sans tabou sur les sujets proprement « féminins », tels que les menstruations, la maternité, les relations sexuelles, l'amour romantique, leur corps… Elles se présentent drôles, intelligentes, belles, agressives, cultivées, émotives, vindicatives, provocatrices…
L’humour semble justement permettre d’aborder ce dont il ne faudrait pas parler. Comme Freud le notait en effet, l’esprit, le Witz, produit la libération d’une satisfaction en contournant la censure. Quant à l’humour proprement dit, celui qui recourt à l'ironie, n’introduit-il pas « un sentiment particulièrement libérateur et exaltant »[3], comme le notait le même Freud ? Le surmoi semble y dire : « Regarde, le voilà donc le monde qui a l’air si dangereux. Un jeu d’enfant, tout juste bon à ce qu’on en plaisante ». Là est la dignité de l’humour !

Reading Lacan's Seminar XX: Encore

Those of you who followed our online reading of Jacques Lacan’s Seminar XVII (April – July 2020) might recall that in it, Lacan draws the line at any suggestion that the Freudian discourse might be based on biological facts of sexuality. Indeed in 1935 Freud wrote: “I object to all of you (Horney, Jones, Rado, etc.,) to the extent that you do not distinguish more clearly between what is psychic and what is biological, that you try to establish a neat parallelism between the two […] I would only like to emphasise that we must keep psychoanalysis separate from biology just as we have kept it separate from anatomy and physiology".[1] But Seminar XVII is also the seminar in which Lacan distances himself from Freud by rendering the Oedipus complex “strictly unusable”, criticising him for choosing to pursue his theory of the Oedipus instead of being oriented by the knowledge gained “from all these mouths of gold” of Anna, Emma, and Dora. [2] We follow Lacan in his path beyond the Oedipus complex, opening up to the field of jouissance and the question of its feminine mode which, Lacan declares, Freud abandoned. In fact, Freud could go no further insofar as he encountered the rock of castration.
The field of jouissance—­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­a field Jacques-Alain Miller named ‘Lacanian’ by giving this title to the chapter elaborating on it in Seminar XVII—highlights the cut between libido and nature. It is what the formulas of sexuation will come to articulate in Seminar XX insofar as the side chosen by each speaking being is not akin to any biological given or socially constructed gender but is instead a choice of jouissance. Having left behind Freud’s famous question about woman’s desire, Lacan provides a metaphor instead: “[Woman] lends herself to surplus jouissance because she, the woman, plunges her roots, like a flower, down into jouissance itself". [3] Thus Lacan uses his most political seminar to introduce what will come to be articulated in the subsequent seminars, and especially in Seminar XX, as the not-all, opening the path to the singular which characterises the ethics of our orientation.
Seminar XX is a seminar dedicated to the psychoanalytic themes of sexuality, love, desire, and jouissance. Most of Lacan’s famous aphorisms are found in it: the formulas of sexuation, the Other jouissance, supplementary jouissance, the not-all, and Woman does not exist. With Encore Lacan introduces a novel approach to sexuality that constitutes a break from traditional knowledge and its organisation around binaries. How can we think differently to man / woman? How can Lacan help us understand gender fluidity in today’s civilization? What are the consequences of the fact that there are women and not the Woman; a “Feminine principle” rather than a jouissance monopolised by women? [4]
We are inviting everyone to join us in our reading of Encore, which is a logical continuation of Seminar XVII, but also constitutes part of our preparations for the WAP’s Great International Online Conversation: “Woman does not exist" [5]; it brings together the seven schools and friends of the WAP in a great conversation of epistemic and clinical significance.
