XXI NLS CONGRESS

20 – 21 May 2023

NLS-congresXXI(1).jpg

CALL FOR PAPERS

Simultaneous Clinical Sessions

Simultaneous (parallel) sessions will take place on Saturday 20 May, 13:00 -16:15, with some in English and others in French. There will be no translation: each speaker and each participant will select the language of their choice.

We invite you to propose a contribution in line with the theme of the Congress, "Anxiety and Discontent". It is a theme especially conducive to the development of a case-by-case clinic, oriented as much by the analytical experience of the practitioner as by the epistemic references of our field. It is a theme geared as closely as possible towards knotting public discourses and the subjectivities of individuals who either subscribe to them or are rejected by them.

A 'clinical case' is this very knotting, unfolded under the effect of transference.

So, your contribution will be about a clinical case, which will be read by the scientific committee.

Papers to be sent by the 20th of March to the following address:

e.koukouli.nls.secretary@gmail.com

In the following form:

– 7,000 characters, including spaces, written in Times New Roman font, size 12, line spacing 1.15.

– In the body of the text: the author’s surname, first name, e-mail address and mobile phone number.

– Subject of the email: NLS Congress – Simultaneous Sessions NAME First name

Some guiding themes:

Freudian clinic: anxiety neurosis, anxiety hysteria.

Current forms of discontent: the impact of current discourses on subjectivity

 Acute anxiety vs. panic attacks

 From anxiety to the symptom

The emergence of anxiety under transference

Phobias: limits for desire or bulwarks against jouissance?

Direct hold of anxiety on the body: scarification, bulimia, etc…

Anxiety and separation: fall of the object/letting drop of the subject

LCE Volume 6, Issue 7: "Lacanian Visions" by Clotilde Leguil

In her presentation, Clotilde Leguil develops Lacan's notion of 'vision,' that contains both the experience of 'seeing' and 'not seeing' at the same time, literally and metaphorically, and all its relevance for psychoanalysis and the clinic. Leguil adds that 'vision' gives rise to passions from which the subject suffers, illustrated by the example taken by Lacan from Saint Augustin. This imaginary modality of seeing oneself through the other, gives way in analysis to another experience, she remarks, "when the subject realizes that his being is situated elsewhere, at a point where a destiny he cannot decipher, determines his existence despite his efforts to escape it."

New Guises of the Object
Florencia F.C. Shanahan

There is a strong and firm orientation towards the 2023 NLS Congress. It is the orientation by the real in the clinic and in civilisation by means of the path that anxiety constitutes. And, in this orientation, it is that which Lacan called his only invention, the object a, that becomes the function of this passage whereby, according to Daniel Roy’s presentation of the theme, “anxiety is the trace of our body’s contribution to civilisation’s discontent.” [1]

This trace is signalled by the object which Jacques-Alain Miller highlighted as having risen to the social zenith, “an intensive element, which outdates any notion of measure, which goes toward the measureless, following a cycle […] of accelerated renewal, of frenetic innovation.” It is the “compass of civilisation today, the principle of the hypermodern discourse of civilization.” [2] Let us underline this syntagm “frenetic innovation,” and its resonances, for the exploration of these “new guises of the object.”

We can read this together with Zigmundt Bauman’s thesis about our times: “If in solid modernity, inclined to produce solid seats in which to re-root what had been uprooted, the royal road to success was to accommodate oneself, to fit into that prefabricated seat, in liquid modernity, the secret of success lies in not being unduly conservative, in avoiding making any particular seat habitual, in being mobile and always at hand, in proving oneself to be the genuine article necessary for flexibility, always at a disposal, ready to start again, rather than conforming and sticking to a form that had once been set.” [3]

SIMULTANEOUS SESSIONS FOR PIPOL 11

Call for Papers

www.pipol11.eu

What is patriarchy?

This question posed by Guy Poblome at the end of the argument announcing the next Pipol Congress is a point of entry to the clinical day to be held on July 1st 2023. Patriarchy, a term that has been revised today appears in the garb of an ideal.  Curiously, the current debates touch a broad range of people, who blame patriarchy for their cause. However, what does this term cover, coming as a unanimous response to all upheavals, whether they are racial, feminist, gender or even ecological?

In these simultaneous sessions, the maladies of the father and their consequences as well as the different ways of being a father in modern society will be explored. But the aforementioned patriarchy extends well beyond the question of the father, it also concerns in a broader way the body’s involvement in the structure of the unconscious, the very one that Lacan formalised as the discourse of the master. Violence! Domination! we say, when it is a question of the signifier striking the body as a result of our subjection to language. Patriarchy is invoked as the ready-made answer to the troumatism with which everyone has to contend, it permeates contemporary discourses in the form of victimisation or revolt driven by discourses of freedom, sometimes to the point of ravage. The challenge of psychoanalysis is to deconstruct ready-made truths, an operation that has become increasingly risky. Its ethics, far from the goodwill  demanded by many, aims to give the subject a chance to see his mode of jouissance more clearly.

The simultaneous sessions of Pipol 11 will be an opportunity the to explore this theme. Based on clinical work, the aim will be to convey the singularity of each case as closely as possible, the way in which the practitioner has been able to intervene in the phantasmatic – and even delusional – knottings of a subject.

Providing opportunities for meetings and exchanges between practitioners from the four corners of Europe working within the multiple networks of the Freudian Field, this clinical day promises to be a rich moment of the Congress. Each one, whether working in private practice, in a consultation centre or in a care institution will have the opportunity to send a case from their practice. Do not hesitate to refer to the orientation texts that will be published in the next few weeks in the Pipol 11 Blog:  www.pipol11.eu

The PIPOL 11 simultaneous sessions will feature 120 clinical cases in 4 languages, presented throughout the day in 10 different rooms. And this year it will be an opportunity to share the joy of being together in person. We look forward to receiving your contributions by April 1st at the latest. Your text can be sent to us in English, French, Italian or Spanish at  simultanees.pipol11@gmail.com with the following instructions:

– 7500 characters including spaces

– Word format

– Write your surname, first name, region of work and e-mail address at the top of the first page

Let’s get writing,

Céline Poblome-Aulit and Thomas Van Rumst, responsible for the Pipol 11 Simultaneous Sessions.

SIMULTANÉES DE PIPOL 11

Appel à contribution

www.pipol11.eu

The bibliography, under the aesis of Franck Rollier accompanied by Roger Litten and a larqe team, will evolve without being exhaustive. Some bibliographic citations extracted from the bibliography will be highlighted in the weekly Newsletter Meteor.

As of now, we await your contributions! We invite you to write a text in French or English, called a flash, based on a theme corresponding to one of the six rubrics of the Blog: At War – Challenges of the Living – Fears and Anxiety – Im-monde – Sexes – Guises of the Object.

The Blog Newsletter, Meteor, will first introduce, one by one, these different rubrics devised from the thematic axes arising from the Congress argument and presented by its authors: Réginald Blanchet, François Ansermet, Lilia Mahjoub, Geert Hoornaert, Anne Béraud and Florencia Shanahan.

As for the flashes, they will be broadcast regularly throughout the Congress preparation. They may be based on a literary, theatrical or cinematographic work, or be written from a commented bibliographic reference, or from a social, political, cultural, scientific or clinical news item (no case histories!). They must adhere to the submission criteria detailed below, which are also the conditions of their eligibility for the blog.

LCE Volume 6, Issue 6: "From The Image To The Signifier Alone" by Bruno de Halleux

In the clinic of autism images are privileged over signifiers, making it into what looks like a "clinic in reverse" compared to the analytic experience. The famous Temple Grandin describes how she "thinks in pictures". Popular intervention methods like TEACHH are based on visual supports.

What is the status of the image for the autist? Since the autistic child's image is neither constituted in the mirror, nor coordinated with signifiers, but rather with his or her jouissance, the image merges with the real. Hence, a clinical approach based on images has its limits, since they are an insufficient basis upon which to organize one's world. In this compelling text, Bruno de Halleux discusses how displacing the axis of psychoanalysis beyond the Other and towards the One in Lacan's late teachings opens up a new way for thinking about the autist's relationship to signifiers, giving a new orientation for working with the autistic child, one that goes beyond the image.
