Call for contributions for the PIPOL 12 blog

Family and its discontents, does this theme resonate with you ? If so, please don’t hesitate to send us your contribution. Your text will be published in the FaMIL newsletter, which will be sent out weekly in the lead-up to the EuroFederation Congress, PIPOL 12.
Based on Katty Langelez-Stevens’ argument, six axes of work have been identified and will serve as the blog’s sections : Family / Institution, Transmissions / Tensions, Family Residue, Family Resources, Family Madnesses, Family Rejection.
Each of these six sections, broken down into a few keywords listed below, will be introduced by an orientation text. These six texts will serve as a solid compass to help orient your own text, your reading of the theme.
You will also soon be able to discover the bibliography carefully compiled by our colleagues — the nuggets it contains might just inspire and encourage you to write a post !
Family and its discontents is a theme that regularly features in the news and it is a topic also treated by politics and science. Your analytical reading could teach us about the issues raised in these different fields. Artistic production in all its forms (cinema, literature, etc.) are full of references to the crucial questions raised by our congress theme. Your post could find a rich resource there for commentary and analysis that might shed light on it.
For reasons of confidentiality, clinical vignettes will not be accepted.
Your texts should be sent to the following address: blog@pipolcongres.eu, with the subject line FaMIL+ author's name — in Word format, Times New Roman 12 font, maximum 3500 characters (including spaces and notes), and indicated in the body of the text and below the title, the author's first and last name, email address and the name of the section it is being proposed for.
Please ensure that references are included as endnotes — using simple reference markers in the body of the text (numbers in square brackets, no automatic markers) — and following the usual format. And for your references and quotations, please use official publications and versions of the original text.
We look forward to receiving your texts !

Love: a Question of the Border

Keren Ben-Hagai

Love for a woman – who consents to be an object of jouissance, who agrees to be divided, is described in L’étourdit as a love that can both sustain the subject, and delimit the real encounter of the One. Sometimes it enables her to encounter the real of her body

Mercedes Rouault

Telle une fine dentelle, délicate et robuste à la fois, le travail du deuil permettra de voiler le trou sans la prétention de le combler. Tissu fragile qu’il faudra reprendre encore et encore avec les signifiants du désir qui le relient à l’Autre manquant.

"Beyond all the psychological characteristics of the one who is targeted by love and hatred, passions are addressed to a point beyond. From his first seminar [Lacan] made love and hatred passions of being. […]

Hatred takes precedence over love for approaching the Other. Love is attached to semblance, whereas hateful passion aims at the real. […]

This hainamoration is the consequence of separation from the jouissance of other Ones. Knowing this, knowing the aporias of love and of jouissance of the vicinity of the neighbor, does not condemn us to cynicism, nor to immobility, nor to simple observation of the irreducible presence of hatred or evil."

CALL FOR PAPERS

FOR THE NLS CONGRESS 2025

You can now send us your clinical work!

Deadline for submissions: Sunday, 2 March 2025

⚠️  The clinical cases selected will be presented in person, in Paris

 Get writing!  ✍🏼

The clinical parallel sessions

The 23rd NLS Congress will take place in Paris, on 17 and 18 May 2025. It will be held in person at the Salons de l’Aveyron. The clinical parallel sessions will take place on the afternoon of Saturday 17 May in the rooms of the salons de l'Aveyron in Paris, from 2pm to 5pm, some in English, others in French, for which there will be no translation; plus a bilingual room with simultaneous translation. Each speaker and participant chooses their language at the time of registration.

We are now inviting you to contribute to the work on the theme of Painful Loves by proposing a clinical intervention. This will be an opportunity to unfold a case and relate it to one of the seven clinical themes below:

Passions: jealousy, sacrifice, possession, fusion, control, hainamoration

Giving: giving everything, giving nothing

Impediments: obstacles (tradition, religion…), inhibition

Dimensions of loss: mourning, rupture, expectation, absence, desertion, abandonment, disenchantment, exile

Difference of the sexes: avatars of object choice, splitting, duplicity, debasement, ravishment, ravage

Fantasmatic liaisons, symptomatic liaisons

The downside of idealisation: blindness, disillusionment, downfall

Your presentation will focus on a single clinical case. It will highlight a clinic under transference. It will show the practitioner or analyst in the picture and the way in which he or she apprehends the painful affect. Remember that in analytic practice, we are led to emphasise the involvement of the signifier in the affect.

You will be able to draw on a conceptual reference, without this cluttering up the presentation of the case.

Your contribution will be read by the scientific commission (English or French)

It can be sent from the 20 January 2025 to the following address:

Do not wait for the deadline – Sunday 2 March – to send your contribution. The time is now!

In the following form:

6 500 characters maximum, spaces included, written in Times New Roman font, size 12, 1.5 line spacing.

Before submission, your text will be proofread by an English or French speaker and strictly formatted according to the above criteria.

The author will propose a rather brief title. Above the text, he or she should write his or her surname, first name, e-mail address, telephone number and chosen clinical theme.

– The subject line of the e-mail should read as follows:

Parallel Sessions NLS 2025 + NAME and first name.

⚠️ Please note: the call for contributions is restricted to NLS members and colleagues working within NLS Societies, Groups and Initiatives.

Patricia Bosquin-Caroz, for the Congress organising committee with Éric Zuliani, Monique Kusnierek, Marina Frangiadaki, Peggy Papada, Frédérique Bouvet, Philip Dravers, Eleni Koukouli, Cecilia Naranjo, Thomas Van Rumst and Natalie Wülfing.

Communiqué of the President of the NLS

It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of our colleague Ellie Ragland, member of Lacanian Compass, the New Lacanian School and the World Association of Psychoanalysis. Ellie Ragland was a pioneer of psychoanalysis in the United States, the first to invite and introduce Jacques-Alain Miller to North America. She worked tirelessly to make Lacanian psychoanalysis heard, transmitting it to many generations of students and clinicians. We offer our sincere condolences to her family and colleagues.
Patricia Bosquin-Caroz, President

Patricia Bosquin-Caroz,
présidente

In Memoriam: Ellie Ragland

Our dear friend and colleague, psychoanalyst, author, professor and editor, Ellie Ragland, passed on January 6, 2025 at 83 years old in Columbia, Missouri. Ragland will remain in a category of her own for the Lacanian orientation in the United States. She was a trailblazer for psychoanalysis in the New World. In 1984, she was the first to bring Jacques-Alain Miller to North America, the same year that she published her first book on Jacques Lacan, one of many to follow. In 1987 she started a newsletter in order to publish Miller in English, a project that would later become the journal (Re-)turn.

In an interview from 2022, Ragland recounts her first encounter with Lacan’s work, “I started reading ‘The Rome Discourse,’ and I could not stop. . . I must have spent ten hours just reading it and getting up only to grab a sandwich. That was my introduction to Lacan in 1972.” Ellie Ragland was a member of Lacanian Compass, the New Lacanian School and the World Association of Psychoanalysis. In the years to come as her legacy in the United States continues to grow, now with a life of its own, we will miss her passion for psychoanalysis, her warmth and her always free spirit.

The funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, January 20, 2025 at Parker-Millard Funeral Service & Crematory in Columbia, Missouri. Burial will follow at Columbia Cemetery.

Love That Does Not Hurt

Markus Zöchmeister

When the partner you are looking for is virtually found on a dating platform, this is initially not a partner of love choice but assigned by the algorithm of the machine, which acts as a guarantee for any replacement. This partner wears the colour of the machine, his loss is replaceable and therefore not a loss that makes a hole in the real.

Painful Loves – Keren Ben-Hagai

We see, then, that the phase of exclusive attachment to the mother, which may be called the pre-Oedipus phase, possesses a far greater importance in women than it can have in men. Many phenomena of female sexual life which were not properly understood before can be fully explained by reference to this phase. Long ago, for instance, we noticed that many women who have chosen their husband on the model of their father, or have put him in their father’s place, nevertheless repeat towards him, in their married life, their bad relations with their mother”.

Freud, S., “Female Sexuality” (1931), The Standard Edition of the Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud, Volume XXI, London: Hogarth Press, 1961, p 230.

Freud spoke of the pre-Oedipal stage, the stage in which the mother serves as the primary love object, as a time that is very difficult to grasp in analysis as if it “had succumbed to an especially inexorable repression.”(1) Unlike phallic jouissance, which is related to the signifier, the object, a baby from the father – can we think of this “inexorable” primary repression together with feminine jouissance?(2) The “other” jouissance that Lacan positioned outside the signifier, is connected with the lack in the Other, with love, and with infinity, and therefore not supported by fantasy. Lacking phallic barriers, the daughter and mother are without limit and lost: it's no coincidence that Freud said we can find there “the germ of later paranoia in women”.(3) Analysis that has on its horizon the delimitation of feminine jouissance can serve as a boundary to the ravage towards the mother, which, according to Freud, manifests in relationships with the husband.
