An artwork by Susan Hiller (2005) named “The Curiosities of Sigmund Freud” captures an interesting ‘bodily trace’, left by Freud. This is part of a wider set made up of nine Iris giclée prints on Japanese hand-made paper, based on eight uncatalogued (and unpublished ) glass slides from the Freud Museum in London and a letter written by Freud [1]
 
I will relate to this fragment of the letter.
A mark (of the body)  Freud insists on highlighting, and Hiller, in her artistic brilliancy, re-finds, and brings out to light.
 
On  August 9, 1882,  Freud writes Marta Bernays, his fiancé at that time, a letter. In this letter we can see Freud circles two ink blots  around this:
'Here the pen fell out of my hand and inscribed these secret signs. I beg your forgiveness and ask that you not trouble yourself with an interpretation'.
 
What is this ׳bodily mark׳? 
An object falling from a hand, making 2 marks, which Freud, and  then Hiller, encircle, expose,
un – cover.
 
Some thoughts-
A pen can fall. Fail. Freud insists on un-covering this ‘failure’, insists on leaving this trace. Is he  introducing a formation of the unconscious? (Psychopathology of Everyday Life, 1901).
Freud is very straight forward : “I beg … ask that you not trouble yourself with an interpretation …”.
Negation? Desire for silence?
 
It seems that Freud is touching upon something of the real. This is a ‘slip of the pen’, literally. Something that has to do with exposing a bit of real, baring it, not covering it with sense. Suspending meaning.
Freud, already in 1882, is betting on jouissance,
 
“What doesn't lie is jouissance, the jouissance of the speaking body”.[2]
How to understand  these ‘secret signs’ he calls them, which stain the letter as well as the precious handmade paper of Hiller’s prints?
Is it about  Lacan’s stain (or spot), that which is out of place in the picture and therefore draws attention to the screen – the unnoticed but essential support of the gaze as it differentiates itself from looking? [3]
Or,
Can we say it resonates Lacan saying in Seminar XX [4]: 
“What is the speaking body? Ah, that's a mystery".

Elle fait partie d’un ensemble plus large composé de 9 impressions Iris giclées sur papier japonais fait main, à partir de huit lames de verre non répertoriées (et non publiées) du Musée Freud à Londres et une lettre écrite de la main de Freud.
 
C’est d’un fragment de cette lettre dont je vais parler, une marque (du corps), Freud insiste sur sa mise en valeur, que Hiller dans son génie artistique retrouve et va mettre en lumière.
Le 9 août 1882 Freud écrit  une lettre à Marta Bernays, encore sa fiancée à l’époque. On peut voir dans cette lettre que Freud a encerclée deux taches d’encre qu’il commente ainsi : « à cet endroit le stylo est tombé de ma main et a inscrit ces signes secrets. Je te demande pardon et te prie de ne pas t’embêter avec une interprétation ».

 Qu’est-ce que cette marque corporelle ? un objet tombant d’une main faisant deux marques que Freud et ensuite Hiller encercle et expose, dé-couvre.

Quelques réflexions-
Un stylo peut tomber. Freud insiste pour dé-couvrir ce « raté », il insiste pour laisser cette trace. Est-il en train d’introduire une formation de l’inconscient ? (Psychopathologie de la vie quotidienne, 1901).
Freud est très direct : Je te demande de ne pas t’embêter avec une interprétation ».
Négation ? Désir de silence ?
 
Il semble que Freud touche là quelque chose du réel. C’est un « lapsus du stylo ». Quelque chose qui a à voir avec la monstration d’un bout de réel, le découvrant sans le recouvrir de sens, suspendant la signification.
Déjà Freud en 1882 parie sur la jouissance.

« Ce qui ne ment pas, c’est la jouissance, la jouissance du corps parlant ». [1]
Comment comprendre ces signes secrets comme ils les appellent, qui tache la lettre en même temps que le précieux papier fait main des estampes de Hiller.
Serait-ce en rapport avec la tache ou le point de Lacan décalé dans l’image et qui donc attire l’attention sur l’écran, support invisible mais essentiel au regard comme différencié de la vue. [2]
Ou bien
Pouvons-nous dire que ça résonne avec le dire de Lacan dans le séminaire XX ? Qu’est-ce que le corps parlant ? c’est un mystère. [3]
